Prevent an Overactive Bladder
Yes, simple lifestyle changes often help people regain control. Physical changes associated with age are not necessarily the cause. In fact, experts don't know what usually causes these involuntary contractions of the bladder. Needing to urinate more often than normal and leaking urine are common symptoms. Drug side effects, as well as urinary tract infections, impaired kidney function, diabetes, bladder stones, and tumors, are linked to the condition. That's why I recommend you see a doctor first to rule out these possible culprits.
Once you have a clean bill of health, consider these changes: Avoid urinary tract irritants such as alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, spicy foods, and feminine deodorant products. Schedule trips to the bathroom every 2 to 3 hours so you learn to urinate when your bladder is full, not just when you feel the urge. Mind-body techniques, such as biofeedback, can be effective, as can maintaining a healthy weight. A 2008 study found that the stress placed by weight gain on the bladder accounts for worsening incontinence among middle-aged women, not a decline in estrogen, as previously thought.
I also recommend Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles you use to halt urination. For the best results, squeeze these muscles and hold for 10 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds. Repeat 20 times, 3 or 4 times a day.
